Our Story: From Canvas to Concrete

Not Just Another Pair of Sneakers

It all started on the campus of Tokyo University of the Arts.

I’m Adan. I was an art student by day and a sneakerhead by night. I remember walking through campus, surrounded by top creative minds, yet looking down at everyone’s feet, I saw the same thing over and over again.

“Oh look, a classic Chicago Jordan 1.”
“Oh look, another Chicago Jordan 1.”

“Wait, that’s the 23rd pair I’ve seen today.”

Don’t get me wrong — Nike’s designs are masterpieces. But they are mass-produced masterpieces. In a sea of millions wearing the exact same “exclusive” sneakers, it became difficult to fully express one’s individuality.

The First Pair

So, I picked up my brush and decided to add a unique touch to my sneakers.

To my surprise, the result was incredible. When I walked through campus again, I noticed I was turning heads. The way classmates looked at my feet had changed — their eyes were filled with surprise and curiosity. Students I didn’t even know couldn’t help but approach me, asking: “Excuse me, I know this is a bit sudden, but where did you get those sneakers?”

I smiled: “You can get the sneakers themselves at any store, but the artwork is one-of-a-kind because I painted it myself. If you like it, I can paint a pair for you…”

This experience helped me make many friends, and I fell deeply in love with the creative process.

From Canvas to Concrete: My Choice

When I decided to shift my creative focus from canvases to sneakers, not everyone understood. My mentors and parents believed I should be exhibiting in galleries, pursuing so-called “High Art,” rather than “wasting time” painting on sneakers.

But I have always believed that art comes from life and should return to life. Art shouldn’t be lofty, locked away in silent galleries. It should be warm, living, and woven into every step of our daily lives.

Everyone is unique. I simply happen to have the professional training to bring that to life. I’m genuinely happy to be the brush that helps you express who you are.

From a Warehouse to a Creative Team

After graduation, I didn’t go to a corporate office like most people. Instead, I rented a small warehouse in Tokyo. Summers were scorching, winters were freezing, and the floor was always littered with crumpled sketches and empty paint jars.

Fortunately, I wasn’t alone for long. Drawn by a shared passion, other artists began to join me — manga artists, graphic designers, fashion visionaries…

Today, Adan Custom has grown into a diverse team of 15 artists. Whether you are into Anime, Ukiyo-e, minimalist lines, or street graffiti, we can turn your imagination into reality.

We aren’t a cold factory; we’re a creative team. If you walk into our studio today, you probably won’t hear the hum of machines—we often paint with music on (and sometimes hum along) while crafting every stroke. For the sake of perfection, we are willing to spend an entire day perfecting even the tiniest detail.
